Guards were known for their cruelty, often turning a blind eye to the brutal power struggles that unfolded among inmates or, worse, encouraging the violence for their own amusement. Solitary confinement cells, known as "The Pits," were particularly infamous—dark, windowless rooms where prisoners were left for weeks on end with little food or water. Rumors of inmate deaths in these cells were common, though rarely confirmed.

The prison's administration was equally corrupt, with warden after warden either resigning under pressure or being removed due to scandals involving embezzlement, inmate abuse, or illegal dealings. Today, the crumbling ruins of Black Hollow Penitentiary stand abandoned, with nature slowly reclaiming the land. Locals claim the site is haunted, with eerie sounds and shadows lingering in the empty halls, echoing the suffering that once defined the prison.
