He was on his death-bed, about to go into a surgery that he had a 10% chance of surviving when he was approached privately by one of the doctors. The doctor revealed that he could save Jasper's life, but he would live on as a Vampire instead of a human. Jasper didn't want to die, though he was afraid of a being a Vampire he figured it would be better than dying.
