Eventually, the Flame Emperor is unmasked as Edelgard, and she assumes the Adrestian throne and declares war on the Church of Seiros in order to destroy the Crest system she believes is stagnating the world. Edelgard launches a full-scale invasion of Garreg Mach Monastery and Claude fights alongside the Church, but the monastery is overrun and Byleth goes missing. Afterwards, Claude returns to Leicester and officially becomes the leader of the Alliance, using his political acumen to maintain a veneer of neutrality and keep the Empire at bay.
