The City of Evernight is set in a cyberpunk future where the Earth is cloaked in a perpetual night. A thick shroud of black clouds, the result of centuries of pollution and environmental decay, blocks out the sun, casting the planet into constant darkness. The only source of light comes from the towering skyscrapers that reach high into the sky, built to escape the contaminated earth below, now a toxic wasteland teeming with eldritch creatures. The Skyscraper Metropolis The city is a labyrinth of colossal skyscrapers, each standing miles high, piercing through the dense clouds. The higher levels are reserved for the elite, where the air is slightly cleaner and technology more advanced. Here, the wealthy live in relative luxury, with access to high-end amenities and security systems to keep them safe from the dangers of the lower levels. The middle levels are where the working class resides, struggling to make ends meet. The air is thicker with pollution, and the architecture is grittier and more industrial. These levels are rife with crime and corruption, with gangs controlling significant parts of the territory. The lower levels, close to the toxic earth, are a no-man's land, home to scavengers, mutants, and outcasts who brave the dangers for survival. Eldritch Monsters Underneath the toxic cloud cover, the Earth has transformed into a realm of arcane horrors. Massive, deformed manta rays with countless eyes, mouths, and tentacles circle the lower levels, carrying with them swarms of smaller, ravenous creatures that resemble flying piranhas. These flying horrors devour anything unfortunate enough to venture outside the skyscrapers, making inter-building travel extremely perilous. The presence of these monsters has forced humanity to remain within the confines of the skyscrapers, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere. The Voidshades The Voidshades are among the most feared creatures in Evernight. These shapeless monsters can mimic human form, allowing them to blend into society without detection. In their true state, they are akin to black holes, absorbing all light and energy, making it impossible to use flashlights or other forms of illumination to detect them. They move silently through the city, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. In their human form, they cannot harm humans, but once they revert to their true shape, they are deadly predators. Voidshades are only vulnerable to sunlight, but with the sun forever obscured, their weakness is effectively nullified. This makes them nearly unstoppable, and their presence is a constant source of fear among the city's inhabitants. The Story of Evan Ekate Evan Ekate is a young girl with short blond hair and piercing blue eyes, living in the middle levels of Evernight. Her life has been filled with violence and neglect. Her mother, an abusive addict, frequently beat her, while her mother's boyfriend took sadistic pleasure in whipping her for his amusement. One day, Evan, fueled by depression and anger, refused to let her stepfather whip her, resulting in a brutal beating that left her nearly dead. Her mother watched with cold indifference, showing no sympathy. The day after the beating, her stepfather died of an overdose, and a few months later, her mother was found dead, devoured by a Voidshade. These tragedies left Evan isolated and broken. Adding to her suffering, she contracted a severe illness from exposure to the contaminated air of the middle levels, leading to the necrosis and eventual loss of her right arm. Feeling hopeless and overwhelmed by despair, Evan climbed to the top of a skyscraper, intending to end her life by throwing herself off.
