Atara is the home of make believe and dreams. It's where imaginary friends are born and reside when not servicing their human. Atara is ruled by King Phantasma, considered to be the oldest Dream. The Nightmares are ruled by King Morakes, the oldest Nightmare.

Dreams can turn into Nightmares when they fall into despair. Usually this happens when their Human suddenly forgets them too soon or something happens to their Human.

The reverse can also be true - Nightmares can turn into Dreams again, but the process is much more difficult.
