Your Mother in World War II
During the darkest days of World War II, Helena, Robert's stepmother, found herself in a place full of contradictions. She had spent years enduring a toxic marriage with him, a man whose wickedness drove her to seek a divorce when she could bear it no longer. You, her son, were always by her side. Despite family tensions, she was your refuge amid the storms that shook occupied Europe.
After Robert's death at the front, Helena's life and yours took an even more uncertain course. Begrenz, in Vorarlberg, was under the occupation of Nazi Austria (also known as the "Ostmark"), but you and Helena weren't content to be mere survivors. You decided to take action. Together, you formed The Legion of the Alps ("Die Legion der Alpen"), an armed movement with a clear goal: the independence of Vorarlberg and the creation of a new country, Alpenheim. The Alpine Legion has weapons stolen from the Allies and the Axis and thousands of militants from all over the world, especially from Europe, China, and the United States. The war had already devastated Europe, and all you wanted was peace and autonomy for a region weary of international strife. Without aligning the movement with either the Allies or the Axis, you sought a third way: total independence.
What began as a fight for freedom became a complex political game with crucial contacts at several key points in Europe. Helena and you had four possible paths, each offering both opportunities and great dangers.
1. The Liechtenstein Way
Through Baron Wilhelm von Hohenberg, a pacifist nobleman from the small principality of Liechtenstein, you began exploring a neutral option. This country, removed from the chaos of war, could be the key to Alpenheim's independence. The plan was simple: declare Alpenheim's independence and merge with Liechtenstein. Thus, both countries would become a completely neutral and peaceful entity, aligned with neither the Allies nor the Axis powers. Helena saw this plan as a way to protect her people, and you, despite the sacrifices it would entail, understood that a peaceful future might be the only way out for a region torn apart by conflict.
2. The St. Gallen Way
With Johann Keller, a Swiss diplomat with deep connections in St. Gallen, you and Helena also considered declaring Alpenheim's independence and merging with this Swiss canton. Switzerland's neutrality appealed to you, but there was also much greater potential. With Johann's support and his influence within Swiss military intelligence, there was a possibility of even breaking Swiss neutrality and forming a larger bloc in Central Europe. If the people voted in favor in a referendum, Alpenheim could join Switzerland, and if circumstances warranted, you could take an active role in the war, either allying with the Allies, the Axis, or even opposing both. The decision was in your hands, but with it came the burden of choosing between peace and aggressive action.
3. The Road to Sicily
With the help of Giuseppe "Pippo" Moretti, a member of the Sicilian mafia with power in Italy and connections to the Axis, you also considered the possibility of joining the Axis under the condition of being recognized as an independent country. Sicily, seeking its own place in the chaos of war, could be the basis for an agreement with Italy and Germany that would recognize Alpenheim as a sovereign nation. However, such an alliance carried with it a heavy burden: war with the Allies, a direct confrontation that could shatter the dreams of peace and autonomy that you and Helena had cherished. Still, Giuseppe's power and his connections with the German government offered a path to rebuilding and strengthening Alpenheim, albeit at a morally high price.
4. The London Road
Finally, Lady Eleanor Westbrook, a British aristocrat and member of the London resistance, was a key contact who offered a path to the Allies. Under her influence, Alpenheim could be recognized as a sovereign nation within the Allied bloc. In return, the Alpine Legion movement would receive military support, resources, and a platform for a post-war Europe. However, as with the path to the Axis, this offer also carried with it a responsibility to align oneself with the ideals of the Allies, confronting the totalitarian regimes that still dominated much of Europe. The alliance would bring with it the hope of a new Europe, but also the pressure of taking sides in a war that had already left millions of victims.
Amidst all this, you and Helena were fighting not only for the independence of Alpenheim, but also for a future in which small countries, tired of war and forced alliances, could finally live in peace. But every path you chose came with great sacrifices. The Alpine Legion movement remained steadfast in its neutrality, but the reality was that war was at its doorstep, and the choices you made could change the course of Europe.
The story of Helena and you is filled with moral dilemmas, personal sacrifices, and the uncertainty of an uncertain future. War is not just a battlefield, but a constant struggle for identity, freedom, and the price of independence. Will you take the path of peace and neutrality, or will you enter into war to secure a future that still seems uncertain? The choice is in your hands.
