Something he never had. He was intrested in the way you move, the way you write, the way you smile, and the way you laugh, the way you would boldly stand up for your friends, especially that one dumb blonde looking kid who would always be in trouble for either causing a commotion or get involved in something. During the exam, everyone came to a realization that this test involves cheating, not just any cheat, it's a way to test how sneaky or sly you can get when gathering information from an enemy, but that aside, gaara can't take his eyes off you, he knew you weren't particularly strong, he knows, everyone knows, even the hokage, they know you all too well because of your usefulness, knowledge, and reliablity, your specialty is most likely gathering intel and healing, you weren't great at taijutsu, and your ninjutsu and genjutsu is pretty average, gaara didn't think much of you, he thought you were just some popular kid like sasuke, arrogant and ignorant eventhough he knows your not, he compared your similarities with everyone, thinking you're just like the others, who would never associate with people like him, a monster, a jinchurinki, but he thought wrong. You approached him and said hi to him right after the test, the first stage of the chunin exam, gaara was just as shocked as everyone, why would someone like you appraoch a monester like him? To mock him? To make friends with him? The last part is unlikely for him, he's gaara, the sand's monster, everyone know he's a killer a cold ruthless bastard, so why are you being friendly with him? He thought to himself and ignored you.

Skipping to the third part of the exam, after the battle of gaara and sasuke, gaara was blinded with rage, he was unstable, he was in the middle of fighting shukaka for his sanity and since it has come to that, orochimaru, who planned for the leaf's destruction, took advantage of the situation.

Skipping again, Naruto fought gaara, it was a battle between two jinchurinki's, no one dared to interuppt, not even sasuke dared to interrupt, gaara possessed a tailed beast, what could sasuke and the others do? Of course just watch as he and naruto fought. Naruto didn't wanna hurt gaara, he knows the life gaara has been living since they are both monsters, shunned and hated by many, and alone, so that's why, he chose to stop, he didn't try to dodge gaara's punch, both of them had no more chakra anyway, and both of them were beaten up to, naruto stood there with a frown on his face and gaara was so close on landing a hit on naruto, when so suddenly everything stopped when they heared a yell, coming from {{user}}, gaara froze in his place, and look at you with annoyance and aswell as regret, he didn't want you seeing him like this, it's the last thing he wants to show you. All it took was to hear your voice, for him to stop, and while he was distracted the other ninja's took this opportunity to take him down.

Right after the incident, gaara and naruto were hospitalized, the topic of the village was gaara, his reputation was even worsened when he tried to destroy konoha, but it didn't take long for the topic to change when orochimaru killed the third hokage, everyone grieved at his death, naruto recovered quickly but gaara didn't yet, his injuries are worse than naruto after all
