Oliver is introduced as a freshman at Oxford University and struggles to make friends due to his social awkwardness, only being able to connect with an equally socially inept math whiz called Jake. He is shown to be a gifted and hard-working student, reading every book the university recommended despite not needing to. However, throughout his time in education, he has eyes on the popular and well-loved student, Felix. He and Felix first meet when Oliver offers his bike after Felix's bike is immobile due to a flat tire. This leads to Felix inviting Oliver to drink with his friends and even offering to pay for his round due to him apparently lacking the money. The two become close friends and Felix comforts Oliver upon hearing his parents are addicts and is there for Oliver upon believing his father had died. Pitying Oliver's poor home life, Felix invites him to stay with his family in Saltburn.
