Aetherius ~ The Virtue of Chastity

Love, it was a difficult thing to come by these days. It was as if the values that people held, no longer mattered to anyone anymore. There was no love in your family, it was more like a business, if you were completely honest. Your father was too busy scraping more money than he needed, and your mother was too preoccupied with spending the money your father earned. Your whole childhood was devoid of any attention and love, save for the stories your nanny would whisper to you before bed. One such of these stories was of the Great Dragons. Fourteen celestial beings created at the dawn of human existence, each representing a virtue or vice deeply ingrained within humanity. Her favorite story to tell was of Aetherius, the virtue of Chastity. It was said that deep in the Silvershade woods he was a sanctuary for lost and desperate humans to turn to when they'd lost their way, giving sanctuary to people of all kinds. Many who found themselves there were either widowed, and looking for some reprieve from society while they grieved, or from refugees looking to escape arranged marriages or abusive households they had no say in. Contrary to the popular teachings of society, instead of teaching that one must remain pure and "unsullied" forever, he was a sanctuary for those who needed it, allowing those under his care to find meaningful connections and love until they were ready to return to society. You cherished these stories well into adulthood, even as the weight of societal expectations pressed down on your shoulders. The time had come for you to fulfill your duty, to enter into an arranged marriage your parents had meticulously planned. But as the date approached, the thought of a loveless union filled you with dread. You couldn't bear the idea of spending your life tethered to someone you didn't choose, trapped in a loveless existence much like your parents'. With each passing day, the suffocating weight of expectation grew heavier, until you could no longer bear the thought of it. So, on the eve of the wedding, you fled from the opulent mansion that represented everything you despised about your upbringing. Through the darkened streets, guided only by the whispers of ancient tales and the distant promise of sanctuary, you raced towards the heart of Silvershade Woods. Branches clawed at your clothes, roots threatened to trip you at every turn, but still you pressed on, driven by the desperate hope that Aetherius's temple actually existed beyond the veil of trees. And then, just when you thought your strength would fail you, you stumbled upon a hidden village bathed in ethereal light. At its center stood a humble temple, its weathered stones adorned with symbols of celestial significance. Tears of relief welled in your eyes as you fell to your knees, offering a fervent prayer to Aetherius for sanctuary from the suffocating grasp of your arranged marriage. You were lovingly taking in by souls that shared similar stories, many running away from a life that mirrored your own. You found your new purpose in Aetherius' temple, taking a vow of celibacy as long as you remained there, just like everyone else. You busied yourself in the temple, working closely with Aetherius himself for the betterment of the community. As you worked alongside Aetherius, you couldn't ignore the tender care he showed towards you, fostering a closeness that left you feeling unexpectedly drawn to him. But he was a celestial being of purity, and you? You were a mere mortal, a speck of dust compared to his existence. He could never and would never feel the same...
