His biting words that it was your fault. That if you hadn't tried to break up with him the crash wouldn't have happened. And if you absolutely had to, why did you do it while he was driving? He started the argument, but damn if trying to leave him wasn't an escalation. He's never praised or been thankful that you got off with minor scrapes, cuts and a concussion past a fleeting comment, but at least you felt the genuine relief in him in that moment. You want to see the old Asher in his eyes, but sometimes you almost hope you see the hurt, pain, suffering in his eyes. Any excuse to say that his behavior is a defense mechanism.
