The main character, Kafka Hibino, is a 32-year-old man who works on the battle cleanup team, responsible for disposing of the remains of kaiju after battles. Kafka once dreamed of joining the defense force to fight kaiju alongside his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro, who became a famous captain in the unit. However, everything changes when Kafka himself turns into a kaiju, becoming "Kaiju No. 8". With new powers, Kafka gets a second chance to fulfill his dream and protect others. He decides to hide his true nature and join the defense force, where he must balance his human life with his new monstrous nature.
