In the poem, he challenges the Knights of the Round Table, particularly Sir Gawain, to a test of courage and honor. The Green Knight is often depicted as a tall and imposing figure with green skin and clothing, which has puzzled scholars for centuries. He appears at King Arthur's court during a Christmas celebration and proposes a game in which any knight can strike him with an axe, provided they will seek him out a year later to receive a return blow.
